JOJO'S:
WATCH ORDER

Unlike most long-running shonen, JoJo's anime adaptation lines up chronological and release order almost perfectly. Each part follows a different Joestar-family protagonist and is largely self-contained, so there's no filler maze to navigate — just work straight down the list.

#1

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (Part 1: Phantom Blood & Part 2: Battle Tendency)

Required

TV Series · 26 episodes · 2012–2013 · 10.4h

Covers Jonathan Joestar's rivalry with his adopted brother Dio, then jumps 50 years to Joseph Joestar's fight against the ancient Pillar Men.

💡Phantom Blood (episodes 1–9) is slower and doesn't have Stands yet, but it's only nine episodes and sets up the Jonathan–Dio rivalry that echoes through the whole series.
#2

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders

Required

TV Series · 48 episodes · 2014–2015 · 19.2h

Jotaro Kujo leads a journey from Japan to Egypt to defeat a resurrected Dio and save his mother, introducing Stands as the series' new power system.

💡This is where most first-time viewers jump in — animation and pacing improve significantly, and Stands are explained clearly from scratch.
#3

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable

Required

TV Series · 39 episodes · 2016 · 15.6h

Josuke Higashikata investigates a string of Stand-related mysteries in the town of Morioh, where a serial killer with a dangerous Stand is hiding.

💡A slower, more mystery-driven part with strong slice-of-life elements — fully required viewing.
#4

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind

Required

TV Series · 39 episodes · 2018–2019 · 15.6h

Giorno Giovanna, Dio's secret son, joins the mafia gang Passione to rise through its ranks and take it down from within.

💡Widely considered to have the best animation of the series — no filler to worry about.
#5

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean

Required

TV Series · 38 episodes · 2021–2022 · 15.2h

Jolyne Cujoh, Jotaro's daughter, is framed for a crime and imprisoned, discovering her own Stand ability as she uncovers a conspiracy inside the prison.

💡Ends with a full universe reset — everything after this point is set in a separate timeline, which is why Steel Ball Run works as a fresh jumping-on point too.
#6

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run

Required

TV Series · 24 episodes · 2026–present · 9.6h

Set in an alternate universe, Johnny Joestar and Gyro Zeppeli compete in a cross-country horse race that becomes a battle over the mysterious Saint's Corpse.

💡Began airing on Netflix on March 19, 2026, with more episodes releasing through 2026 — you can technically start here since it's a standalone alternate timeline, but you'll miss the parallels to earlier parts.

Story, Creator & Reception

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is written and illustrated by Hirohiko Araki, serialized since 1987 and one of the longest-running shonen manga in history at over 130 million copies sold. The anime holds a MyAnimeList score above 8.4, with Stardust Crusaders and Golden Wind rated as fan-favorite parts.

Why Order Matters

Each of the six parts follows a new protagonist generations apart, so the order is simply Phantom Blood through Steel Ball Run in sequence. The main pitfall is the OVA: an earlier 1993 adaptation covers only part of Stardust Crusaders and isn't required viewing.

Studio & Dub Cast

Animated by David Production, Jotaro Kujo is voiced by Matthew Mercer in the English dub. Araki names each Stand after real musicians and bands, a running theme fans track across every part of the series.

Trivia

Araki is known for his distinctive fashion-forward art style, influenced by European haute couture, and has drawn official Gucci campaign artwork. Steel Ball Run, part 7, is set in an alternate universe and was later followed by a direct sequel, Jojolion.

Common Mistakes

FAQ

Do I need to watch Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency before Stardust Crusaders?

It's recommended, but not strictly required. Many fans start with Stardust Crusaders since it's the first part with Stands and higher production values — but Parts 1 and 2 are only 26 episodes total and set up the core Dio rivalry.

Can I start with Steel Ball Run instead of watching everything first?

Yes. Steel Ball Run is set in an alternate universe and tells a standalone story, so you won't be lost on plot. You will miss the alternate-timeline parallels to earlier parts that make it extra rewarding.

Is there filler in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure?

Very little. David Production has adapted the manga parts sequentially and faithfully, so there's minimal anime-original content to skip.

What happens to the timeline after Stone Ocean?

Stone Ocean ends with a complete universe reset. Steel Ball Run and any parts adapted after it take place in a separate continuity from Parts 1–6.
